Rescue of lion Moody

An urgent rescue mission

War leaves behind unimaginable devastation - for both people and animals.

Lioness Wisha faced the unimaginable. Her partner had passed away just two days before our team arrived. She was pregnant when we found her at the Sudan Animal Rescue Centre, among 15 other lions left behind in a high-risk war zone. With water and food quickly running out, their lives were hanging by a thread.

Every life saved was hard-won

This rescue mission was one of the most challenging we’ve ever undertaken. Our team navigated dangerous conditions and heartbreaking losses. Lions like Karim succumbed to injuries, and Leo fought valiantly but couldn’t hold on. Yet, our team never gave up hope of bringing as many animals as possible to safety.

New beginnings at LIONSROCK Sanctuary

At last, 11 lions arrived at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa. After receiving immediate medical care, they took their first steps onto grass in their new, forever home.

Arrival and release of Sudan Lions to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary.
  • Mina is the largest female lion and matriarch of the pride. Her nurturing nature is evident in her special bond with her brother, Moody, who is learning to regain his social skills - showing us that healing takes time.
  • Sam, with his distinct furry ears, shares an unbreakable bond with Leo. Despite his playful nature, Sam is a protector, especially of the younger lions.
  • Caroline,  known as "Sunshine," takes on the role of the pride’s gentle guardian. Observant and vigilant, she watches over the group, ensuring harmony and safety.

These transformations are made possible thanks to our big cat sponsors.

Will you sponsor a lion?

In our sanctuaries, animals leave behind inappropriate and traumatic keeping conditions, to experience dignified and species-appropriate care for the rest of their lives.

As a big cat sponsor, you will receive behind-the-scenes access to life at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary from the lion’s caretakers themselves. Not only will you continue to hear about Sam, Mina and Caroline, and the other Sudan lions, but you’ll also get to meet the other residents they share their home with.

So far, we’ve rescued more than 250 big cats, but our work isn’t done. Will you become a sponsor and make our lifesaving work possible?

  • £5 a month could feed a rescued lion for a day.
  • £10 a month could help to medically treat and continuously care for animals in captivity and transfer them to our sanctuaries around the world.
  • £20 a month could provide lion cubs with special milk formula for a week.
  • A generous monthly gift of £50 could help to fund the full care of an orphaned baby cub in one of our sanctuaries for a month.

Your gift could help to rescue neglected lions.

Regular gifts are vital to allow us to act quickly and carry out our life-saving work at a moment’s notice.

With gift aid, your monthly gift of £1 could be worth £1.25 at no extra cost to you.

I understand you will reclaim the tax I've paid on this donation, any I've made in the past four years and any I may make in the future. To qualify for Gift Aid, I must pay as much UK income and/or captial gains tax as FOUR PAWS UK and the other organisaitons I support claims on my behalf in each tax year. This is currently 25p on every £1 that I donate. If I pay less tax, I'm responsible for paying the difference. Gift Aid will help fund FOUR PAWS' general work. I can cancel this declaration at any time.

DISCLAIMER: Your sponsorship makes a difference! It not only contributes to the care of the big cats in our Sanctuaries but also helps protect big cats in need all around the world. We are working hard to end the suffering of big cats kept in tiny barren cages and the cruel practice of canned hunting. Your support does even more than that – it helps to protect all animals in need and brings us one step closer to a world where people treat animals with empathy, respect and understanding. Donations are used where needed most.
