The Government is currently negotiating with the EU to improve cross-border trade in food, drink, animals and plants and, we are concerned that fur products may be included in the scope.
Including fur in the scope of the agreement could derail progress toward banning the import and sale of fur in the UK, a move the public overwhelmingly supports, and one the Government already committed to exploring through its new Animal Welfare Strategy.
Not only this, but we are also waiting for the long-overdue publication of the Animal Welfare Committee’s report into the sourcing of fur materials. Set to be published at the end of last year, this report will contain further evidence into the animal welfare impact of the fur trade.
We need explicit confirmation that fur products are outside the scope of the agreement. Without this clarity, momentum toward a Fur Free Britain could stall.
This is a crucial moment. We cannot let trade talks become an excuse to delay action for animals.
