Support diet change, not climate change

Plate of vegetarian food

Join us in calling for global leaders to commit to combat climate change.

Dear world leaders,

Scientific consensus shows that animal agriculture is responsible for at least 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and causes significant environmental degradation, from biodiversity loss to deforestation.

Shifting to a plant-rich diet is one of the most effective climate-mitigation measures –  along with tackling food waste –  and provides multiple benefits from a health and environmental perspective.

This year, the United Nations Environment Programme stated that transforming diets to derive more protein from plants and less from animals has the potential to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20% of current emissions.

I pledge to reduce or eliminate animal products in my diet. Around the world millions of people are doing the same, tackling climate change through diet change. But we need world leaders to take responsibility to drive this shift further and faster.

As the pathway to limiting climate change to just 1.5 Celsius is narrowing quickly, we ask World Leaders to:

  • Formally recognise the global warming impact of industrialised animal agriculture at the Conference of Parties (COP26) and
  • Commit to develop and invest in mitigation strategies to support and drive a just transition towards plant-centric food-systems.

"Transformation of diets such that protein needs are derived more from plants and less from animals has the potential to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 0.7–8 GtCO2e by 2050 (2–20 per cent of current emissions). Co-benefits include improvements in human health and wellbeing, conservation of biodiversity and enhanced ecosystem services.”
